GETTING STARTED

​​

​EXPECTATIONS​ OF A LEVEL 1 (LOCAL) REFEREE​

  • Be an active referee as a Local Referee

  • Studies to learn the rules of the game

  • Is prepared to officiate 13U - 16U youth competitions

  • Officiate elementary and junior high school leagues and tournaments

  • Attends Provincial/National Championships

LEVEL 2 - PROVINCIAL

HOW TO GET

​​

​​​​EXPECTATIONS​ OF A LEVEL 2 (PROVINCIAL) REFEREE​​​

  • Be an active referee as a Provincial referee

  • Studies and continues to learn the rules of the game

  • Prepared to officiate 13U - 18U youth competitions

  • Able to referee up to the level of an OVA tournament at 15U Premier

  • Officiate any high school leagues and tournaments, including OFSAA

  • Active on lines and/or score at OCAA/OUA level

    • Awareness of E-Scoresheet

  • Gain experience as a second referee when able

  • Attends Provincial/National Championships annually

LEVEL 3 - REGIONAL

​HOW TO GET

​

​EXPECTATIONS​ OF A LEVEL 3 (REGIONAL) REFEREE​

  • Be an active referee as a Regional Referee

  • Studies and continues to learn the rules of the game

  • Prepared to officiate all youth competition levels in Ontario

  • Prepared to officiate OCAA matches as first or second referee

  • Certified on E-Scoresheet

  • Attends Ontario Championships/National Championships annually

  • Mentor Level 1 & 2 referees

  • Involved with the referee community on and off the court

LEVEL 4 - NATIONAL

​EXPECTATIONS​ OF A LEVEL 3 (REGIONAL) REFEREE​

  • Be an active referee as a National Referee

  • Studies and continues to learn the rules of the game

  • Prepared to officiate all competition levels in Ontario

    • Able to officiate equivalent levels outside the province

  • Certified on E-Scoresheet

  • Attends Provincial/National Championships annually

  • Mentor Level 1, 2 & 3 referees

  • Involved with the referee community on and off the court

HOW TO BECOME AN FIVB REFEREE

  • Aspiring referees start at the national level, then progress to international status through courses and proven experience at their Confederation level.

  • The FIVB Referee Course is offered approximately every 4 years; only the top 25 candidates are selected.

  • Eligibility for the FIVB referee course requires English fluency, International Referee status within your confederation, that you be between the ages 30-45, and have a commitment to mental and physical fitness.  ​

Upon successful completion of the FIVB Referee course, referees will be award FIVB Referee Category C (entry level) and progress through the following levels and FIVB competitions:

  • Category C  

    • FIVB Age Group World Championships

  • Category B2

    • FIVB Age Group World Championships​

    • Volleyball Challenger Cup

  • Category B1​

    • Volleyball Challenger Cup​

    • Volleyball Nations League, excluding the finals

    • Club World Championships

    • Olympic Qualification Tournaments​

  • Category A

    • Olympic Games​​

    • World Championships

    • All FIVB levels​​
