• Must have been active as a Provincial Referee for at least two years

• Must be recommended by the RRC for entry into the Regional Upgrade Program.​​

• Must meet the registration deadline and remit all fees as required

RUP OVERVIEW

How to Apply

Complete the Regional Upgrade Program (RUP) Application Form on the OVA website.  

 

By completing this form, you are making an expression of interest in the program. Taking this step means you are seeking to become a senior level official with the Ontario Volleyball Association and Volleyball Canada. If successful, you will be certified to officiate OCAA and/or OUA matches.

After filling out the RUP Application form, the RUP chair will talk to your RRC and the senior referees you listed. The Provincial Referee Committee then makes the final decision on who will enter the Regional Upgrade Program. You may need to attend an assessment tournament in October of the year you are applying. Being invited to an assessment tournament does not mean admission to the program.​​

Program Length

Two (2) years, if successful

The program itself is 2 years in length, however, in special circumstances, a candidate may complete the program in 1 year.

Year 1 Requirements

• Attend all Theory Sessions

• Complete 3 practical tournaments

• Complete 1 day mentorship at OVA event

• Pass written exam with an 85% or higher

• Complete 3 modules

• Submit match logs for the year

• Attend 17U and/or 18U provincials.

Year 2 Requirements

• Attend 2 practical tournaments

• Complete 1 day mentorship at OVA event

• Submit match reflection forms

• Submit match logs

• Attend 17U and/or 18U Provincials.

​Candidates will receive mileage and per diems where applicable and all accommodations are covered by the OVA. Candidates will not receive match fees for matches completed as part of their upgrade training. Instead, match fees earned during the program will be used to offset candidate and program expenses as part of a cost-sharing model.

Program Expectations

​Once accepted to the RUP, candidates are expected to

• Be an active referee as a Provincial Referee

• Attend Ontario Championships/National Championship

• Attend a pre-season OCAA exhibition selection tournament

• Attends an advanced referees' theory clinic sanctioned by the Provincial Association

• Certified on E-Scoresheet

• Attend an advanced practical course component sanctioned by the Provincial Association

  • Referees at OVA youth tournaments 16U – 18U Premier Division

• Successfully completes written and practical examinations with 85% or higher

• Approval by National Referees' Committee

LEVEL AWARDED UPON SUCCESS

• Regional - Level 3 (Indoor Only)

If successful, the referee is rated as a "REGIONAL" Referee of Volleyball Canada and should make himself/herself available to officiate different types of volleyball matches as frequently as possible.​
