KASSAA: Updates from the Playing Court

As the season progresses, and after seeking clarification from KASSAA, I wanted to bring a couple of items to your attention. My sincere thanks to those of you who brought your initial concerns to my attention.

ESP Mille-Îles - Senior Boys Team

  • Concern: The Senior Boys team has 2 girls/women playing on their roster? Is this approved by KASSAA?

  • Result: Yes; this has been approved by KASSAA and is permitted as outlined below.

  • Rationale: Mille-Îles, being a smaller school with a limited population of students, will likely not be in a position to field a Senior Girls team during the Girls' Season. Per OFSAA's Gender Equity Policy 2025 - Article C, it is permitted for girls to participate on a boys' team following a successful tryout. Should Mille-Îles actually be able to field a Senior Girls team during this academic year, these 2 athletes will be ineligible to play under KASSAA Constitution Article D9.2.9A.

La Salle Secondary School - Junior Boys Team

  • Concern: One of the athletes is wearing a beanie-style cap that has wires coming out of it - it this permitted?

  • Result: Yes; this has been approved by KASSAA and is permitted as outlined below.

  • Rationale: The cap is covering this player's cochlear implant; a small, complex electronic device that bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear to directly stimulate the auditory nerve and provide a sense of sound, and is therefore a medical exemption.

    • Headwear Reminder - Volleyball Canada Rule 4.5.1-A.3

      • Headwear (E.g.: hats, bandannas, etc.) is not permitted except those worn for medical, religious and/or cultural beliefs.

      • Headbands can be worn, at a maximum 5cm in width, made of non-abrasive cloth, pliable plastic, or rubber

    • From KASSAA Beliefs:

      • WE BELIEVE in the right of all people to participate in sports and to pursue their personal levels of excellence.

Please continue to use your better judgment. If you have a concern, please referee the game, and then bring it to the attention of Dale or Sue (Incident Report Form) for discussion/resolution. Thanks again everyone!
